Super Hero Speak Review: Robyn Hood #1

Whether you are a long time reader of the Robyn Hood series or a new comer, Robyn Hood #1 is an excellent beginning to the next chapter in her saga. This book masterfully sets up the 3^rd chapter in the series. Those who have read the series know that Robyn is back in New York and ready to make a difference. For the new comer the book is masterfully written so that you do not feel lost in the new story.

Pat Shand does an excellent job of easing us into Robyn’s new adventures in new work. Where we find her working with Marian Quin in New York as a private investigator of the super natural. The book begins with a cold open where a politician is giving a speech and Robyn is posing as his escort for the evening. Leaving long time Robyn Hood fans wonder what is going on. The book quickly takes an unexpected comical twist when we learn her true purpose for her guise as an escort.

The story continues when Miss Locksley returns home to find Marian discussing a possible new case with a new client. And the story takes a handful of masterfully written twists and turns from there. Leaving us wonder throughout the issue on the unknown villain’s true purpose until we end the issue with one of the best new villain reveals I’ve seen in a long time.

With cover art by David Finch that not only catches your eye, but does an excellent job of capturing the strength of our heroine. The interior art in the book is handled by Larry Watts and colored by Slament Mujino. The team does an excellent job of capturing the tone of the story. In the usual Zenescope fashion this is an extremely well done and beautifully executed. When Robyn confronts a group of undesirables in a shady bar the art does an amazing job of portraying the urgency and bturtality of the scene. Leaving no question in your mind that Robyn Hood is not a hero to be taken lightly.

Every beat of the story is masterfully hit. And the art definitely captures the life and energy of New York city with breathtaking detail. The story is extremely well passed and the art keeps you turning the pages.

I honestly have not read Robyn Hood from the beginning, but was pleasantly surprised that I did not feel lost at all in this story. This first issue has grabbed my attention and I am sure to keep reading this exciting new chapter in the Robyn Hood saga. This is an excellent read and I highly recommend it to all our fans.
